Rooftop Units

Fitted to the roof, a rooftop unit (RTU) is an air handler, i.e., it cleans the indoor air and provides heating and cooling to the building. With a capacity ranging from three to 40 tons (and more, depending on which custom model one chooses), this HVAC system generally lasts about 15 years. The RTU is also called a packaged system because the components mentioned above, such as fans and air compressors, are all “packaged” together in one machine.

Unlike the latest RTUs, older models are not energy efficient because they use far more electricity to function. It’s important to replace these systems quickly because the older they get, the more they add to the power bills.


As the name suggests, chillers are HVAC systems that cool a building. They transfer heat outside with the help of a refrigerant. Though a chiller traditionally uses up a lot of energy and proves expensive, a variable frequency drive can improve its efficiency through:

  • Speed control: According to the requirements of the building occupants at any given moment, speed control is essential in doing away with energy wastage and diminishing the maintenance costs of single-chiller systems.
  • Right sizing: Matching the machine's capacity accurately to the building's size and capacity for optimized energy consumption.

Just like RTUs, newer models of chillers too are designed to be far more efficient in terms of energy usage and costs. When it comes to transferring heat out per unit of energy input, high-efficiency electric chillers are an ideal option compared to absorption chillers.
